Kidde fire extinguisher recall; What you need to know.

Today, the federal government is launching a large-scale recall of Kidde fire extinguishers. It covers around 40 million extinguishers  made by Kidde that may be defective when used.

The recalled extinguishers date back decades and some of the models covered by this recall have been recalled previously.

The CPSC claims extinguishers with plastic handles and push button operation – or “pindicators” as they are known – can clog, preventing proper discharging of the extinguisher during a fire emergency. Nozzles can also be detached under significant pressure during discharge of the extinguisher.

There have been almost 400 reports of Kidde fire extinguishers malfunctioning resulting in 16 injuries and 1 fatality.

In response to the recall, Kidde said “customer safety is our first priority” and that it is “working with the relevant authorities to ensure that affected fire extinguishers are replaced as quickly as possible” Kidde will replace all extinguishers affected by this recall with ones featuring metal components. The list of recalled models is shown further down this page, as well as on the Kidde Website  and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

What steps you need to take

  • Check the make, model and serial number of any fire extinguishers in your home or work place.
  • Check the list below, or on the CPSC website (we recommend the latter as the list may be updated later) to see if your extinguisher is affected.
  • If your extinguisher is affected, remove it from service immediately – a bad fire extinguisher can be more dangerous than no fire extinguisher as you may put yourself in harm’s way to tackle a fire with defective equipment.
  • Call  Kidde toll-free at 855-271-0773 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday, or online at www.kidde.com and click on “Product Safety Recall” for more information.
